Letter Supernumerary
A Thank-You Note
Kind Reader,
When I started this project last July, I didn’t know what to expect. I was delighted that, in three months, I found 300 subscribers. I then set a goal, to have 1000 subscribers by July 4, 2026, when this “newsletter” will be a year old.
I think there are probably that many people in the world who would enjoy receiving and reading this letters, but finding them is a different problem. Progress has been much slower in these past eight months. There have even been times when I have lost old subscribers faster than I have gained new ones!
As the number of these letters has grown, I set a more modest goal: to have 500 subscribers by the time the 100th letter was published. I almost made that one. When the 100th letter went out yesterday, it went out to 480 people.
I am writing this supernumerary letter to you to THANK YOU for subscribing, and just as importantly, to thank you for NOT unsubscribing. Thank you also for, if you do, recommending this Substack to others. Person-to-person contact is still the best thing going.
What troubles me is the fear that very few of those who receive these letters actually read them. I don’t expect anyone to read all of them, of course, but I like to think this labor of love serves a purpose. So I ask you, PLEASE, if you like the contents of one of these letters, to “like” it, so that I know you like it. Better still, leave a comment! If you have questions, if you have a topic of interest you would like Dr. Franklin to address, if you have suggestions for how I might improve these letters, write to me. You can do that through Substack, or just send me an email at pryor.notice@gmail.com. I really do want to hear from you!
I will take no more of your time, but to assure you that I am, as Dr. Franklin might say,
you friend and humble servant,
B.J. Pryor

I always look forward to your posts. Having the first-hand words from my favorite Founding Father delivered to my inbox is a real treat. Thank you for what you do!
Dear B.J.,
It has been a pleasure, receiving and reading your letters from Mr. Franklin! They take me back to a time long ago, spent learning and teaching about all things 18th century, and they keep me connected to two men, centuries apart, who have influenced my life. Thank you.
