Speaking of Captain Cook, Benjamin Franklin personally saw to it that he would not be treated as an enemy during his third voyage, which took place during the Revolution. Instead, Franklin wrote to American captains and asked them to treat Cook as a man of science and render him any aid that he may need.

The irony being that Franklin drafted that letter a month after Cook was killed in Hawaii. His ship might still have benefited from it, if it had encountered an American vessel on its return voyage.

H.M.S. Resolution sailed on July 12, 1776, just after the Declaration of Independence, but before anyone on board had heard about it. It arrived safely back in England on October 4, 1780, under the command of its THIRD captain, Lieutenant John Gore.

‘The Wide Wide Sea’ by Hampton Sides was a great read about Cook’s last voyage. There’s a lot of irony with the second captain, Clerke, too. He got TB in a debtor’s prison on account of his brother, who was out of the country and who died during the voyage without Clerke’s knowledge.
